Most Important Conservative Task – Seize the Narrative

Conservatives have to figure out a way to seize the narrative from the liberals.

The way media is used to sway thought is to come up with some sound bite that seems to characterize either your own goals or the opposition. When such a sound bite gains traction, it no longer is relevant whether it contains a shred of truth.

For example, liberals get away with calling the Republicans the “party of no.” Reasoned argument gives no value to such a statement. However, the sound bite remains forceful.

Another one is “the failed policies of the Bush Administration.” If you look at all the “failed policies of the Obama Administration” they are the same policies except orders of magnitude worse. Most pointedly, one of the so-called failed policies of the Bush Administration is “increasing the deficit.” This is an egregious example of the sound bite overwhelming reality.

Conservatives thus have to battle these seemingly powerful “sound bites” which have no reality. In a reasoned argument, it is fairly easy to combat them by asking what is meant by the sound bite, then countering it. However, the venues for reasoned argument seem to have disappeared, to be replaced by the media-fostered sound bite war.

So either Conservatives need to come up with effective sound bites on their own. Or find some way to combat sound bites on their own turf.

Top ten list of misleading or false sound bites:

  • Tax cuts for the wealthy
  • Failed policies of the Bush Administration
  • Party of No
  • Anti-immigrant (very different from anti-illegal immigrant)
