Why don’t we agree how big the public sector should be?

I would like to see some discussion on a policy that determines explicitly how big the public sector should be.

This goal should be openly debated, and once agreed, no spending or tax policy should be enacted that disturbs this balance.

I believe that until agreement on the size of government is made, it will be very difficult to have any agreement between the right and the left, as there is a predominant tendency for discussion to quickly degenerate into talking points and name calling.

I believe that agreement upon the size of the public sector will be difficult. But trying to decide policies without this prior agreement is even more difficult, and even an exercise in futility, as the agendas of the parties can be easily hidden.
