How big should the government be?

Why is there no explicit policy debate on exactly how large government should be? It is one thing to say “I am for smaller government” — but how small? 20% of the economy? 30%? 40%? Having the a a person’s view helps one understand his or her position, and where they are coming from.

I have said before that having the awareness of this policy position should really precede any other economic discussion.

So where do the candidates stand? I have posted this question to Google/Fox News for the upcoming Presidential debate.
