Tax “Cut” Doublespeak

Why do conservatives continually cede ground to the progressives on the subject of taxes and tax “cuts?”

In George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four there was the political technique called “doublespeak“, which was used to deliberately distort and reverse the meanings of words. As in Communist dictatorships, the “place of torture” might be called the “palace of enlightenment and joy.”

There are no “tax cuts” on the table. There are only tax increases. When the progressive talks about “tax cuts” for the wealthy, he is being disingenous, as there is no such thing going to happen. Only tax increases.

The top 5% already pay nearly 60% of all income taxes. So naturally any tax changes are going to affect them more, no matter what the change is going to be. To talk about tax cuts for the wealthy sounds like this is something the average Joe would favor. However, if you want truth, you must say “tax increase” for the job creators.
